DIVING IN EL CARBON MARINE RESERVE GRAN CANARIA

El Carbon, one of three marine reserves in the Canary islands, was classed as a site of special scientific interest by the European Union in 2001.

The warming Gulf stream in conjunction with a no boat and no fishing policy, has given life to a morass of marine flora and fauna, which has made the area popular with scuba divers from all over the world.

THE AQUARIUM

This dive site gets its name due to the large number or fish to be seen and is  perfect for inexperienced diver or your second dive. Great for: Trumpet fish, common sting rays, octopus and many of the usual reef fish. Depth: 5/16m. Visability: 15/25m. Current: Easy to moderate.

THE ARCH

Often said to be one of the best dives in marine park. Swim down the valley to the arch at 14 metres, and look through the hole for a great view of masses of fish set against the sunlight that streams through. Great for: Large shoals of “bastard grunts” (roncadores), barracudas, sea bream and trumpet fish. Depth: 3/24m. Visability: 15/25m. Current: Moderate to strong.

HOLE IN THE WALL

Amazing dive that starts with an easy swim down to the swim through that gives the site its name. Go through this and you come to the reef proper, then onward into a natural light filled cavern. Great for: Large common rays, hundreds of bogas, damsel & trumpet fish, bream, nudibranchs, Canarian lobsterette and shrimps. Depth: 5/24m. Visability: 15/25m. Current: Moderate to strong.

RONCADORES

Long dive over the main reef system of the reserve and you need to be good on air to make it back to the entry point, but well worth the effort. As you head down you are completely surrounded by large shoals of the Roncadores that give the site its name and many other fish . Great for: Large numbers of rays, barracuda, bream and plenty of common reef fish. Depth: 5/24m. Visability: 15/25m. Current: Moderate to strong.

THE GORGONIAN'S

Long deep dive for the more experienced. The gorgonian fans that give the site its name can be up to two metres in width, their delicate fronds swaying in the current give a good ‘photo op’ for the collection at home. Great for: Marbled electric ray, gilt head bream, damsel fish and wrasse. Depth: 5/30m. Visability: 15/25m. Current: Moderate to strong.
